ICBA Commentary: Building Permits

The Independent Contractors and Businesses Association (ICBA) of BC offered the following commentary on today's Statistics Canada release of the building permits survey for April 2009.

“These numbers show that we’re not out of the woods yet,” said Philip Hochstein, President of the ICBA. ”The monthly variations don’t mask the longer term trend of less construction work than there was a year ago, with corresponding layoffs. We’re coming off unprecedented highs for our industry, and how far down it goes is still to be determined.

Hochstein noted that for consumers, this is a great time to build. “With price reductions and many bidders per job, buyers are getting excellent value. If you’re looking to renovate your home or build something new, now you’ll be able to find that contractor, plumber or drywaller you need at a great price.”
