ICBA Commentary: February Labour Force Survey

(February 6, 2009 - VANCOUVER) The Independent Contractors and Businesses Association (ICBA) offered the following commentary on today's Statistics Canada release of the labour force survey for February 2009.

“The job numbers clearly show that construction is one of the biggest drivers of the economy, so governments need to get infrastructure projects going quickly, not next year or two years from now,” said Philip Hochstein, President of the ICBA. “Every billion dollars spent on construction creates 20,000 direct and indirect jobs. We need to get BC working to build and improve our infrastructure now, including both large and small shovel-ready projects.”

"Many construction workers who had put off education because of the previous boom in jobs are now turning their attention to training and upgrading skills," added Hochstein. “Incentives for retraining from governments can help workers improve their future hiring prospects and productivity by going back to school.”
